The hotel opened in April 2018 in the footprint of what was Newport Beach City Hall. The expansion will now push into the old firehouse property on 32nd Street, adding roughly 15,000 square feet to the property. While I wasn’t blown away by the room or the service, and I was outright disappointed at their treatment of Bonvoy Elites, the hotel did have a lot of things going for it. The hotel’s dining options were also impressive, with The Mayor’s Table being a true gem (for breakfast & dinner) with a gorgeous bar.
But - there is some significance to where this place is located; it’s on the spot where the old city hall used to be. It’s influenced the concept of the hotel - Olson wants it to become the hub of the local area, much like the site was back in its political days (the restaurant is called The Mayor’s Table). It’s a nice idea, and provided it doesn’t become too ‘clubby’ could give it a unique feel, as a chain hotel where you can get a unique mood of the surrounding area.
